Edo State’s Governor, Godwin Obaseki, just gave civil servants a reason to dance: a shiny new minimum wage of N70,000! Quite the raise, huh? But with Obaseki’s term wrapping up soon, can his successor keep up the momentum?

The big announcement came during the opening of the brand-new Labour House in Edo state. Starting May 1st, 2024, the new pay kicks in.

Edo State Governor Raises Civil Servants’ Minimum Wage to N70,000

Now, why the fuss?

This development comes amidst a broader national conversation led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) pressing the Federal Government for a wage hike in response to soaring inflation rates. March 2024 saw a staggering inflation rate of 33.2%, up from 31.7% in February, with food inflation climbing to 31.7% from 30% during the same period, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have been advocating for a new minimum wage of N615,000, with discussions spearheaded by a 37-member panel convened by President Bola Tinubu. However, amidst these broader negotiations, Governor Obaseki’s move raises questions about its timing and feasibility, especially with his tenure winding down and elections on the horizon.

So, is Obaseki’s move a genuine bid for worker welfare, or just political grandstanding ahead of elections? Opinions vary among Nigerians.

Samson Imasuen “Thank God Obaseki still have more than Two months as Governor, let him implement it with immediate effect before leaving office. Election is at the corner, so Nigeria politicians don’t mind to bring You God from heaven.”

Gbenga “What an awesome amazement, who will implement it at his exit? Or is it to lure the workers to vote his candidate? Over to Edolites. Most of this film tricks don’t add up this days.”

Tobi “He should wait for labor and FG to conclude the minimum wage negotiations.. this is an ambush. Only legends will understand what he has done.”
