Communal violence once again ravages parts of South Sudan, as recent outbreaks in Western Equatoria and Eastern Equatoria states have led to tragic consequences. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has swiftly responded to these dire circumstances, deploying additional peacekeepers and launching urgent patrols to mitigate the escalating violence and protect vulnerable communities.

In Eastern Equatoria state, armed Murle youth from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) launched a violent attack on Kapoeta East County on April 26, resulting in civilian casualties, abductions, and the displacement of countless individuals. The UNMISS has condemned these actions and is actively working to verify the extent of the damage and casualties.

Similarly, in Western Equatoria State, Tambura town has become a focal point of conflict, with over 13,000 people displaced as a result of communal violence. Displaced individuals are currently seeking refuge in displacement camps operated by the UNMISS, with an additional 4,000 individuals arriving following renewed violence. The situation remains dire, with tensions running high amidst reports of civilian killings, abductions, and property destruction.

Nicholas Haysom, the special representative of the Secretary-General and head of the UNMISS, has emphasized the mission’s commitment to protecting civilians caught in the crossfire of intercommunal violence. In Eastern Equatoria, the UNMISS has called upon GPAA authorities to recover abducted individuals and reunite them with their families, while also urging the enforcement of the rule of law to prevent further atrocities.

To bolster its efforts, the UNMISS has deployed an additional 76 military peacekeepers to reinforce the Tambura temporary base, enhance protection measures for displaced families, and increase patrols in affected areas. Furthermore, the mission is actively engaging with local and national political actors and community leaders to de-escalate tensions and restore peace in Tambura town.

In conclusion, the UNMISS remains steadfast in its commitment to mitigating intercommunal violence and protecting the lives of innocent civilians in South Sudan. Through coordinated efforts and cooperation with local authorities and communities, it strives to foster stability and pave the way for sustainable peace in the region.
