Why It Matters

The repairs, commencing May 13th, 2024, are expected to last until November 7th, 2024. To minimize traffic congestion, the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi, has devised a phased approach.

Phase 1, starting on May 13th, will target the stretch between Glover Road Junction on Alfred Rewane Road and Falomo Roundabout. This section will be completely closed to traffic.

Motorists traveling on Alfred Rewane Road towards Falomo Roundabout will be diverted at Glover Road Junction. They will need to turn left onto Thompson Avenue, access Falomo Bridge via Bourdillon Road, and continue their journeys. Thankfully, the other side of the road, heading towards the mainland, will remain open.

This extended repair project has some residents worried about lengthy commutes and potential business disruptions. However, the Lagos State Government argues that these repairs are essential to ensure the long-term safety and efficiency of these vital roadways.

What They Are Saying

Motorists are advised to plan their trips carefully, consider alternate routes, and expect delays during the construction period. The government has also encouraged the use of public transportation as a viable option during this time.

The success of this traffic management plan hinges on driver cooperation and awareness. By following the designated diversions and remaining patient, residents can help minimize the overall impact on traffic flow.

“Phase 1 will focus on the stretch from Glover Road Junction on Alfred Rewane Road to Falomo Roundabout, starting from Monday, 13th May 2024. During this phase, the portion of the road from Glover Junction to Falomo Roundabout will be closed to traffic,” the Friday statement read.

For the period of the 1st Phase repair works, Motorists on Alfred Rewane Road heading towards Falomo Roundabout will turn left at Glover Road Junction onto Thompson Avenue to access Falomo Bridge through Bourdillon Road and continue their journeys. The other side of the road will be open to traffic, (i.e Falomo Roundabout heading towards Mainland).”

This large-scale project raises questions about future infrastructure investments and maintenance strategies. While some see this as a necessary inconvenience, others may question if preventative measures could have minimized the disruption.

As Lagos continues to grow, prioritizing infrastructure maintenance will be crucial to ensure a smooth-functioning transportation network for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
