The dream of one more match between tennis legends Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic was dashed on Tuesday as Murray was eliminated from the Geneva Open. The 37-year-old wild card entrant was trailing 7-5, 4-1 to Yannick Hanfmann when a thunderstorm halted play on Monday. The match resumed on Tuesday, with the German world number 85 swiftly wrapping up the second set 6-2.

Ever since Friday’s draw, tennis fans had eagerly anticipated a potential showdown between members of the iconic Big Four—Djokovic, Murray, Rafael Nadal, and the now-retired Roger Federer—who have dominated men’s tennis for the past two decades. Instead, Hanfmann’s victory sets up a second-round clash with world number one Djokovic on Wednesday.

Murray, now ranked 75th in the world and playing with a metal hip, has hinted that his competitive tennis career may soon come to an end. Similarly, Nadal, also battling injuries, is uncertain if he will participate in next week’s French Open.

The Geneva match marked Murray’s first tour-level appearance since he suffered tendon damage in his left ankle at the Miami Open in March. The Swiss clay court tournament serves as a crucial warm-up for the French Open, the second Grand Slam event of the year.

Djokovic, who turns 37 on Wednesday, accepted a wild card entry into Geneva in an attempt to regain form ahead of his French Open title defense next week. The record 24-time Grand Slam champion aims to arrive in Paris with a title, avoiding a first season without a trophy since 2018.

The Geneva Open draw also features world number seven Casper Ruud and top 20 players Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Sebastian Baez.

Murray and Djokovic last faced each other in the 2017 Doha final, with Djokovic emerging victorious. Murray’s illustrious career includes three Grand Slam titles—the US Open in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016—along with 11 Grand Slam final appearances and two Olympic singles gold medals in 2012 and 2016.
