Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martinez has unveiled the 26-man squad set to represent the nation in Euro 2024, with the list subject to changes until June 7th.
The Portuguese national team, led by captain Cristiano Ronaldo, is drawn in Group F and will face the Czech Republic, Turkey, and debutants Georgia.
Ronaldo, appearing in his sixth European Championship, headlines the squad alongside new additions Francisco Conceicao and Pedro Neto. Despite playing for Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, Ronaldo’s impressive form continues, having scored 42 goals and provided 13 assists in 41 games.
Martinez praised Ronaldo’s remarkable statistics, highlighting his consistency and goal-scoring prowess. Alongside Ronaldo, veteran Porto defender Pepe, aged 41, joins the squad, bringing experience and leadership to the team. Pepe’s vital role in Porto’s Champions League campaign and league performance earned him a spot in the squad.
Martinez emphasized Pepe’s importance both on and off the pitch, lauding his defensive skills and influence in the dressing room. The Portuguese team enters Euro 2024 after an undefeated qualifying campaign, with Martinez boasting an impressive record of 11 wins in 12 games.
Before the tournament, Portugal will face Finland, Croatia, and the Republic of Ireland in home friendlies. With appearances in the European Championship final phase for the ninth time, Portugal aims to build on their past successes, including their triumph in 2016.
The squad comprises a mix of seasoned stars and emerging talents, with notable names such as Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias, and Bernardo Silva. Portugal’s defensive line features a blend of experience and youth, including Manchester City’s Ruben Dias and Barcelona’s Joao Cancelo.
