Over the past year, Lagos State has witnessed a significant development in its traditional leadership structure.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has been actively involved in strengthening the chieftaincy system, as demonstrated by the installation of roughly 50 new monarchs.

This move comes alongside the reconstitution of the State Council of Obas and Chiefs, with 84 new members appointed.

These actions highlight Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to promoting equity and unity within the state’s traditional institutions.

Speaking about these achievements, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Kayode Robert, emphasized the current peace and stability enjoyed by the chieftaincy system.

He attributed this positive development to the strong support and trust residents have placed in Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership.

Commissioner Robert went further to assure Lagosians that Governor Sanwo-Olu remains dedicated to prioritizing the needs of the grassroots.

This focus on the local communities forms a cornerstone of the administration’s development policies.

The ultimate goal, as Commissioner Robert outlined, is to deliver good governance that benefits all residents and propel Lagos towards becoming a thriving 21st-century economy.

The commitment to good governance extends beyond traditional leadership. The Sanwo-Olu administration has also shown a strong dedication to supporting the families of deceased public servants.

A noteworthy achievement is the disbursement of N391 million in insurance benefits to 164 families of council and SUBEB workers over the past year.

This initiative demonstrates the administration’s compassion and commitment to the well-being of its employees and their families.

Why this matters?

By actively engaging stakeholders and collaborating with local councils, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development is playing a vital role in fostering development at the grassroots level.

This focus on rural development is expected to curb the trend of rural-urban migration, leading to a more balanced and sustainable Lagos.

Bottom Line

Looking ahead, Commissioner Robert expressed unwavering determination within his ministry. He emphasized their continued focus and drive to bring positive change to the lives of Lagosians.

This focus aligns with the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus agenda, a comprehensive development strategy that prioritizes transformation, heritage & entertainment, making Lagos a 21st-century economy, education and technology, healthcare, and a sustainable environment, with an additional focus on security and social justice.
