What They Are Saying

In its advisory, the FCDO urged British citizens traveling to Nigeria to check with their airline or agent before embarking on their trip. This follows the shutdown of airports, including both local and international terminals, across the country on Monday.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria have commenced a nationwide strike affecting public services across Nigeria,” the FCDO advisory stated. “This includes disruptions at all Nigerian airports, including international terminals,” it added. “You are advised to check with your airline or agent before traveling and make alternative arrangements where required.”

Why It Matters

The advisory from the UK FCDO underscores the severe impact of the nationwide strike on Nigeria’s economy and public services. The strike, initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), has led to a shutdown of economic activities, including airports and the national grid. This highlights the pressing issues facing the country and the urgent need for the Nigerian government to address the demands for a new minimum wage for workers.

Bottom Line

The ongoing strike action in Nigeria has prompted international concern, with the UK advising its citizens to reconsider travel plans. The Nigerian government is under increasing pressure to resolve the crisis and mitigate the widespread disruptions affecting the country’s economy and public services.
