NUC’s Warning

During the 7th Annual Registry Lecture at Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, Dr. Biodun Saliu, NUC Deputy Executive Secretary, highlighted the escalating security challenges within the nation’s university system.

Emerging Challenge

Saliu emphasized that the prevailing insecurity in Nigeria poses a significant threat to the safety and well-being of university communities.

Reported Incidents

Numerous cases of kidnappings and abductions of university members have been reported, resulting in fatalities and disappearances among academic staff and students.

Nationwide Impact

Incidents of kidnapping have been documented across universities in different regions of the country, disrupting teaching, research, and overall institutional functioning.

Systemic Challenges

Saliu outlined various systemic challenges confronting Nigerian universities, including inadequate funding, infrastructural deficiencies, staffing shortages, poor remuneration, and governance issues.

Addressing the Crisis

Despite the daunting challenges, Saliu proposed several solutions, including enhanced funding, legal strengthening of the NUC, curriculum overhaul, and improved quality assurance mechanisms.

Key Recommendations

  • – Increased budgetary allocations and timely releases for public universities.
  • – Enhanced subventions for private universities, with an initial focus on academic objectives rather than profit.
  • – Strategic recruitment of qualified academic staff to address institutional needs.
  • – Expansion of infrastructural facilities and access to university education.
  • – Adoption of ICT-enabled blended learning for improved content delivery.

Why it Matters

Recent incidents, such as the tragic murder at Ajayi Crowther University, underscore the urgent need to address security concerns and ensure a safe learning environment for all university students and staff.

Bottom Line

The security threats facing Nigerian universities demand immediate attention and concerted efforts from stakeholders to safeguard the integrity and well-being of higher education institutions nationwide.
