The US has pledged to give an additional sum of $225 million as security aid to Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia.

Joe Biden, US president, announced this when he met Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday at the D-Day commemorations in northern France.

Joe Biden had apologized for the delay of $61 billion in aid, which he blamed on some Republican members of Congress. He, however, affirmed his support for Ukraine by stating, “The United States stands with you.”

Joe Biden praised the resilience of the Ukrainian president in not bowing to pressure from Russia. “You haven’t bowed down, you have not yielded at all, you continue to fight in a way that is just remarkable, just remarkable,” Biden told Zelensky.

The new package includes air defense interceptors, artillery ammunition, and other critical capabilities, the White House said.

“The President emphasized that US support for Ukraine is unwavering,” the statement said, adding that the two leaders agreed to meet again at the coming G7 summit in Italy.

In another statement, the US Department of Defense said the security package would provide Ukraine with weapons “to meet its most urgent battlefield needs.”

Why it matters

The ongoing war with Russia has taken a heavy toll on Ukraine. Despite the challenges, Ukraine has maintained its stance of not bowing to its oppressors. However, they would not have been able to handle Russia alone without the help of allies. This outlines the importance of having allies and diplomatic relations between states, especially powerful ones.

Bottom Line

The United States’ commitment to supporting Ukraine highlights the crucial role of international alliances in maintaining global stability and resisting aggression. As Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty, the aid from the US and other allies is not only a lifeline but also a testament to the power of solidarity against oppression.
