The wait for a new Olubadan of Ibadanland continues amidst controversy surrounding the health of the chosen king, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde recently confirmed receiving the Olubadan-in-Council’s recommendation for Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan. However, Makinde’s statement, stressing the king-to-be’s need for sufficient strength before enthronement, has sparked debate.

What They Are Saying

Governor Makinde, speaking at the late Olubadan Oba Lekan Balogun’s final burial ceremony, assured the public that due process was followed in selecting Olakulehin. He acknowledged the recommendation and expressed his intention to proceed with the coronation “as soon as our father, Oba Olakulehin is strong enough.” This announcement has caused a stir, with some citizens questioning the nature of the health concerns and their impact on the king’s ability to rule.

“I have seen the recommendation of the Olubadan-in-Council and I have accepted it. I have accepted it and we will, as soon as our father, Oba Olakulehin is strong enough, he will be enthroned because due process has been followed.”

Why It Matters

The controversy stems from the nomination process itself. In April, the Olubadan-in-Council nominated Olakulehin, but concerns arose regarding his physical fitness for the demanding role. Otun Balogun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abimbola Ajibola, voiced these concerns publicly. However, Olakulehin himself has refuted these claims, asserting his medical fitness and readiness to assume the throne.

Bottom Line

The future of Ibadan’s monarchy hangs in the balance. All eyes are on Olakulehin’s health as the city awaits its new leader. Governor Makinde’s comments have ignited public discussion, with many eager for a swift resolution. Only time will tell when Ibadan will witness the coronation of its 43rd Olubadan.
