The residents of Bassa, a predominantly farming community in Niger state, have been compelled by bandits to flee their residence after a brutal assault in the community left 20 people dead.

Sani Musa, the senator representing Niger East Senatorial District, had broken the tragic news on Friday while making remarks on the decapitation and murder of 20 youths and members of Bassa, a community in the now infamous Shiroro Local Government Area.

The senator stated that the attackers had beheaded 10 youths and killed another 10 residents for reportedly rejecting the bandits’ demands to join their group.

This development is coming after the Bassa community was attacked on Thursday. The bandits had gathered about 20 people, with tge aim to conscript them into their ranks but when 10 of the youths had resisted, they were beheaded and the remaining 10 were shot dead.

What They’re Saying:

Sani Musa, was quoted as saying;

“Only three weeks ago, a group of bandits invaded Kuchi Community, killing seven security agents and went away with about 150 people.

“Up till this moment, the entire Kuchi community remained deserted. These latest attacks are coming when the people are preparing to return to the farm, which is their only occupation,” he said.

Why It Matters

The surge in migration from Bassa, a farming community in Niger state, underscores the devastating impact of terrorist assaults on local residents. Senator Sani Musa’s somber announcement sheds light on the harrowing reality faced by communities in Shiroro Local Government Area, where violence has become alarmingly frequent and it highlights the urgent need for effective security measures to protect civilians and restore stability to the region.

To curb this growing crisis in that region, more security forces should be deployed so they can deter attacks and provide a sense of safety for residents.

Furthermore, increasing patrols, establishing checkpoints, and improving intelligence gathering to preemptively thwart attacks will go a long way in nipping this menace in the bud before it really escalates.
