Prior to tonight’s game, Switzerland has never defeated France in an competitive game and they have just knocked the World Champions out of the European Championship.

France and Switzerland headed to a penalty shootout after extra time in the round of 16 of the European Championship. Mario Gavranovic scored the equalizer for Switzerland in the 90th minute in Bucharest.

It’s the second match of the day to go to extra time. Spain and Croatia were also even at 3-3 after 90 minutes. Spain ended up winning 5-3 in Copenhagen.

Going into the competition, Les Blues were tagged the favorite to lift the trophy considering the number of talents in the team, but they have been sent packing by the SUI team that showed fighting spirit even after missing a penalty earlier in the second and falling behind in the space of three minutes.

Switzerland for the first time in 67 years(World Cup 1954) have reached the quarter-final of a major tournament and will now face Spain on Friday at Krestovsky Stadium in Russia.
