Super Falcons Retain Top Spot in Africa in Latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings

Nigeria’s women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, have solidified their status as Africa’s premier team in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings released on Friday, June 14th. Despite fierce competition on the continent, the Super Falcons continue to reign supreme, holding onto the 36th position globally.

In a ranking update that took into account over 150 international matches played in the past three months, the Super Falcons outperformed their African rivals. South Africa’s Banyana Banyana are the closest competitors, positioned at 51st in the world and second in Africa. Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses, fresh off their impressive World Cup debut, remain the third-best team in Africa, ranked 56th globally.

  1. Nigeria – 36th in the world
  2. South Africa – 51st in the world
  3. Morocco – 56th in the world
  4. Zambia – 64th in the world
  5. Ghana – 65th in the world
  6. Cameroon – 68th in the world
  7. Ivory Coast – 71st in the world
  8. Tunisia – 78th in the world
  9. Mali – 81st in the world
  10. Equatorial Guinea – 82 nd in the world

Globally, Spain continues to lead the rankings as the reigning World Champions, followed by France, England, and Germany. The USA, traditionally a powerhouse in women’s football, now sits in the fifth position after a series of mixed results.

The stability in the rankings for the Super Falcons is a testament to their consistent performance and dominance in African women’s football. Their recent achievements include securing their qualification for the 2024 Olympics after a crucial set of matches against South Africa.

As Nigeria looks ahead, the focus will be on maintaining their top spot in Africa and climbing further up the global rankings. With their rich history and formidable talent pool, the Super Falcons remain a force to be reckoned with on the international stage.

The next FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking will be published on August 16, 2024, and fans are eager to see if Nigeria can further improve their standing.
