Official Statement

The warning was communicated on Friday through a statement by Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection. The statement emphasized that any airport staff or government agency personnel found accepting bribes would face severe punishment.

Enforcement and Penalties

FAAN highlighted that the Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, had recently reiterated this stance. “The MD of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, at a recent event, issued a stern warning to staff and all government agencies operating at our airports. FAAN will ensure that anyone found culpable of accepting bribes will be punished,” the statement read.

Guidelines for Travelers

FAAN also provided several guidelines to ensure smooth travels during the festive season. The authority has upgraded security measures to protect travellers and their belongings. Travelers are advised to:

  • – Arrive at the airport early: International travelers should arrive three hours before departure, while domestic travelers should arrive two hours prior.
  • – Pack luggage personally and keep it attended.
  • – Utilize expanded screening areas for a better experience.
  • – Keep an eye on valuables during screening.
  • – Follow regulations regarding prohibited items, liquids, and gels.
  • – Use information desks for assistance.
  • – Park vehicles properly to avoid towing and refrain from using tout services.

Importance of the Warning

Bribery and extortion are common issues in Nigeria, particularly during high-demand periods such as the Sallah festival. This warning aims to ensure seamless travel experiences and timely boarding for travelers, emphasizing the need for both airport users and officials to adhere to ethical practices.

Bottom Line

FAAN’s warning against bribery and extortion this Sallah season is crucial for maintaining order and efficiency at airports. By following the provided guidelines and avoiding corrupt practices, both travelers and airport staff can contribute to a safer and more pleasant travel experience.
