Despite its obstacles, democracy in Nigeria must be safeguarded by all citizens. The speakers gave their recommendations at an event hosted by the Lagos State House of Assembly to honour the country’s 25th year of uninterrupted democratic rule.

Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; former Governor of Lagos, Mr. Babatunde Fashola; international diplomats, and business professionals spoke on Wednesday evening that democracy has benefited Nigeria since the country’s Fourth Republic began in 1999.

Prof. Eghosa Osaghae of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Dr. Muda Yusuf, past chairman of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce, and Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) also spoke at the occasion.

Obasa stated that Nigeria deserved to celebrate since, over the last 25 years, the country had effectively passed power from one administration to another while maintaining the values of representation, accountability, and the rule of law.

Mr. Babatunde Fashola, former governor of Lagos, also spoke, saying that 25 years of democracy had allowed for effective representation of the people as well as the ability to make laws.

He urged Nigerians to defend democracy with zeal, saying that the federal system practiced in Nigeria remained critical to the country’s development. “I sympathise with individuals who are rightly frustrated by democracy. It can be a laborious way to govern. There is no better way to organise our affairs. I refuse to sacrifice the privileges it provides for anything else.

Laurent Favier, Consul General of the French Embassy in Lagos, commended Nigeria, saying, “Democracy is not a state of perfection, but something people must fight for at all times.” The political structure must be strengthened.”

On the other side, Weert Börner, Consul General of Germany, stated that his country, which has 16 states, follows the same federal system as Nigeria, resulting in good rivalry.

Ugo Boni, Consul General of the Embassy of Italy, assured Nigeria that his country’s government will continue to be a trustworthy partner.
