June has proven challenging for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, as the latest FIFA World Rankings, released on June 20, 2024, reveal another setback. The team has dropped eight places, falling from 30th to 38th globally.

This marks the second consecutive decline for the Super Eagles, following a two-place drop in April. The recent slide is attributed to underwhelming performances in World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria managed a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic. These disappointing results jeopardize their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Despite their global decline, the Super Eagles still rank fifth among African teams. Morocco leads the African rankings at 12th globally, followed by Senegal (18th), Egypt (36th), and Cote d’Ivoire (37th). Nigeria remains ahead of their primary qualifying group rival, South Africa, who are ranked 59th globally and 10th in Africa. They also rank higher than Cameroon (49th) and Ghana (64th).

Looking ahead, the focus for the Super Eagles is on improving their performances to climb back up the rankings. With crucial matches on the horizon, fans and management are hopeful for a strong showing to secure their place in the 2026 World Cup. The upcoming fixtures will be vital for the team’s aspirations, and a turnaround in form is essential to regain their standing both in Africa and globally.
