Euro 2020 Final: Italy versus England it is

Scenes at Wembley as England won it late against a resilient Denmark side to set a final showdown with Italy on Sunday at the Wembly Stadium.

Denmark have been riding a wave of momentum  and were determined to put themselves in a position to repeat the unlikely heroics of their victorious Euro’92 campaign, but their impressive campaign ended with a defeat.

Mikkel Damsgaard put the Danes in front from a cracking free kick in the 30th minute. It took England nine minutes to be back on level terms as Saka’s low cross was guided into the back of net by the Danish Captain Simon Kjaer while trying to stop Sterling from putting the ball in.

The game headed into extra time with the two teams playing to catch each other on the back foot, and Raheem Sterling after missing a glorious chance in the first half came to life after he switched from the left wing to right wing to accommodate Grealish. He was brought down by Joakim Maehle in the first half of the extra time and the referee awarded the penalty to England.

Kasper Schmeicher saved the penalty, but Kane was alert to put the rebound beyond him and that secured England’s place in the final on Sunday for the first time in 55 years.

They will be facing an Italian side that defeated Spain on Tuesday in a penalty shootout, and Roberto Mancini’s side will be looking to upset the Three Lions on home soil and to keep their 33 games unbeaten run intact. Meanwhile, history has it that England has never lost in a major tournament at Wembley  Stadium.

The two European giants have faced each other 27 times, the Azzurri winning 11 to England’s eight, with eight draws. Italy prevailed on penalties the last time they met at the Euro 2012 quarterfinals.

Italy have looked the strongest team throughout the tournament but England, with 67,000 fans behind them, will be difficult to overcome. It’ll be a tight and mouth-watering final.
