After several months of intense conflict, signs indicate that Israel and Hamas may be approaching a resolution. For the first time since the onset of the war, Palestinians are openly criticizing the Hamas government, holding it accountable for the devastation and loss inflicted by the ongoing hostilities. Many Palestinians blame Hamas for exacerbating the situation by launching missiles from civilian areas, which has led to significant casualties and destruction.

Accusations of “Dirty Fighting”

Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of using civilians as human shields, contributing to the high civilian death toll during Israel’s retaliatory strikes. Despite these claims, achieving a peace agreement remains challenging as both sides demand the other’s removal from Palestine. Hamas, which has maintained authoritarian control over Gaza since the 2006 elections, faces growing internal dissent.

Uncertain Future for Hamas

The increasing dissatisfaction with Hamas could weaken its grip on Gaza, even if the war ends. Many Palestinians in Gaza are cautious but hopeful. Youssef, a displaced father of two from Khan Younis, expressed his exhaustion: “We hope that this is the end of the war, we are exhausted and we can’t stand more setbacks and disappointments.”

Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

The prolonged conflict has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with significant damage to Gaza’s infrastructure and medical facilities.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, the Palestinian death toll has surpassed 38,000, with over 87,000 wounded. The health ministry’s figures do not differentiate between civilians and combatants.

Israel’s military operations aim to dismantle Hamas’ military and administrative capabilities while adhering to international law and minimizing civilian casualties. Despite issuing evacuation orders, Israeli tanks have yet to advance into certain areas, according to local residents.

Critical Medical Situation

The war has devastated Gaza’s healthcare system. The Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, the last functioning major hospital, faces a critical shortage of fuel for its generators. The Gaza health ministry has urgently appealed to international humanitarian organizations for assistance to secure new supplies.

Bottom Line

The Israel-Hamas conflict, marked by heavy casualties and widespread destruction, may be nearing its end as both sides show signs of fatigue and internal pressures mount on Hamas. The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, underscoring the urgent need for a lasting resolution and international aid.
