The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined Samuel Eto’o, the President of Fédération Camerounaise de Football (FECAFOOT) and former international football star, $200,000 for breaching ethics, integrity, and sportsmanship principles outlined in Article 2, paragraph 3 of the CAF Statutes.

The fine is a result of Eto’o’s engagement as a Brand Ambassador for the betting company 1XBET, which he undertook in exchange for financial compensation. This action was deemed to contravene CAF’s ethical guidelines, leading to the substantial penalty.

In addition to the ethics violation, Eto’o faced allegations of match-fixing and manipulation. However, the CAF Disciplinary Board concluded there was insufficient evidence to substantiate these serious claims. Both Eto’o and his associate, Valentin Nkwain, were thus cleared of these charges.

The ruling underscores the stringent standards CAF imposes on its members and officials, particularly regarding the integrity of the game. While Eto’o has avoided sanctions for the more severe match-fixing allegations, the fine reflects CAF’s commitment to maintaining ethical conduct within African football.

This decision serves as a reminder of the responsibilities carried by those in influential positions within football, emphasizing the importance of upholding the sport’s integrity and ethical standards.
