Governor Fubara Brushes Off Appeal Court Ruling

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara isn’t losing any sleep over the recent Appeal Court decision on the State House of Assembly crisis. Speaking during an inspection of the reconstruction of the Zonal Hospital project in Bori Town, Fubara made it clear that the court’s decision wouldn’t derail his administration’s plans.

What They Are saying

“We’re not deterred,” Fubara confidently stated. “We’ve made promises, and we’ll continue to deliver good governance, no matter how tough it gets.”

On Thursday, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned an order from a Rivers High Court that had prevented Martin Amaewhule and 24 others from acting as lawmakers in the State Assembly. The appellate court, led by Jimi Olukayode-Bada, ruled that the trial court lacked the jurisdiction to handle the case, noting such matters belong in a Federal High Court.

But Fubara brushed off the legal setback, claiming the worst is over. “We’re moving on to ensure we provide what’s needed for our state’s development,” he declared. Citing Psalm 23:5, he reminded everyone that challenges are part of the journey, emphasizing, “God prepares a table before you in the presence of your enemies. Nothing comes easy.

Despite the legal hiccups, Fubara is resolute in his commitment to his campaign promises. He lamented that his administration inherited non-functional zonal hospitals but took swift action by releasing funds for the reconstruction and expansion of four such hospitals just a month ago.

“The contractors are committed and understand our vision,” Fubara said, praising their alignment with his administration’s goals. He reiterated his pledge to focus on healthcare, education, and agriculture in the 2025 budget.

Why It Matters

Fubara highlighted the dire state of the hospitals when his administration took over—no accommodation for medical staff and a lack of essential facilities. His government has added a mortuary to each hospital to ensure they offer comprehensive services.

“When completed, these facilities will meet the healthcare needs of the people within the catchment areas,” Fubara assured. He stressed that this effort aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and his administration’s policy objectives.

Accompanying Fubara on the inspection tour were State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Ore, and State Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Victor Kii. The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the Council, Marvin Yobana, was also on hand to receive them.

Bottom Line

Governor Fubara’s resilience amid the assembly crisis is a testament to his determination to deliver on his promises. While the legal battles rage on, his focus remains on providing better governance and essential services to the people of Rivers State. Whether the opposition likes it or not, Fubara seems set on turning his ambitious plans into reality, one hospital reconstruction at a time.
