NASU, SSANU to Mobilize Nationwide Protests

In yet another episode of the endless tug-of-war between the Nigerian government and university staff, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have called for a nationwide protest. Yes, you heard it right. Brace yourselves for the chaos starting on July 9, 2024, and culminating in a grand protest in Abuja on July 18.

In a circular that might as well be titled “Government Shenanigans: Volume 101,” the unions revealed their frustration with the recent breakdown of talks with the Ministers of Education and Labour. Clearly, the Nigerian government has perfected the art of disappointment.

The circular, dripping with sarcasm and signed by NASU’s General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU’s National President, Comrade Mohammed H. Ibrahim, detailed the union’s grievances. They made it clear that the protest was inevitable due to the government’s “outstanding commitment” to ignoring the unions’ pleas.

According to the circular, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU met on July 4, 2024, to discuss the unresolved issue of four months of withheld salaries. The unions also lamented the fruitless engagement with top officials from the Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC). It seems the ministers have mastered the art of avoiding commitment.

Adding to the drama, the unions recounted their disheartening experience at the Federal Ministry of Labour & Employment. Apparently, the Honourable Minister of State was “urgently” summoned to the villa, leaving the Permanent Secretary to offer nothing but empty words. The unions’ patience has clearly run thin.

JAC has outlined a series of industrial actions. On July 8, 2024, all branches of NASU and SSANU are to hold general meetings to inform members about the government’s insensitivity. The following day, July 9, 2024, each branch will hold a one-day protest, ensuring full participation and media coverage.

The crescendo of this orchestrated dissent will be a national protest in Abuja on July 18, 2024. Post-protest, JAC will decide on the commencement date of the strike action, leaving the government to either act or face the consequences.

So, mark your calendars and prepare for a showdown. The government’s neglect has finally pushed NASU and SSANU to the edge, and they are ready to make their voices heard, loud and clear.
