The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule, has issued a stern 7-day ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding he re-submit the 2024 budget. This comes as no surprise, given Fubara’s knack for stirring trouble in the state. The man swiftly ditched his predecessor, Wike, leaving Wike and his allies in a fit of rage, launching verbal assaults at Fubara at every opportunity.

The ultimatum was declared during the first session of the pro-Wike faction of the House on Monday after a lengthy hiatus. Meanwhile, in a move reminiscent of a political soap opera, another faction led by Victor Oko-Jumbo is holding its own parallel sessions. The political theatre in Rivers State has never been so riveting.

Fubara initially presented the budget to his loyal faction of the House, with his current Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, presiding as Speaker. Predictably, Ehie and the other pro-Fubara lawmakers wasted no time passing the budget estimates, which Fubara promptly signed into law. He boasted that the budget aims to foster economic development, promote inclusive growth, and tackle socio-economic inequality in the state.

However, one can’t help but question the sincerity and effectiveness of these lofty goals. With the House divided and the political atmosphere charged with animosity, the real victims of this political drama are the people of Rivers State. As the two factions continue their tug-of-war, the promise of economic development and social progress seems more like a pipe dream than a plausible reality.

So, while Fubara and his allies pat themselves on the back for their supposed achievements, the rest of us are left to wonder: Is this just another case of political posturing, or will the people of Rivers State finally see tangible improvements in their daily lives?
