The Cross River Police Command has given cheques totaling N43 million to the families of 17 officers who died on duty in the state.

Gyogon Grimah, the State Commissioner of Police, delivered the cheques to the families of the deceased in Calabar on Wednesday.

Grimah stated that the presentation was in line with the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s welfare policy.

He stated that the Police Commissioner’s welfare initiative includes active, retired, and deceased members of the force.

He asked the recipients to make the best use of the financial assistance and to avoid causing division in the family because of the money.

“I urge you all to make the best use of the amount for the prosperity of the family, especially the children of the deceased,” according to him.

In another development, Grimah stated that the command had apprehended 20 suspected offenders throughout the state in the last four months.

Speaking through Superintendent of Police Irene Ugbo, the command’s spokesperson, the commissioner stated that 14 of the 20 suspects had been taken into custody for cult-related offences and had been filed with charges.

The six others, he claimed, had been taken into custody for a variety of offences.

“The breakdown includes one suspect for rape, three suspects for armed robbery, one suspect for kidnapping, and one suspect for unlawful possession of arms.”

Bottom Line

It’s a good thing that the police are providing financial assistance to the families of officers who died in the line of duty. This shows that the force cares about its members and their families, and it can help to ease the financial burden on the families during a difficult time

The amount of money being distributed (N43 million) may not be enough to fully support the families for a long time, depending on their circumstances.

It’s important that the families receive guidance on how to manage the money wisely so it can provide long-term benefits.

It’s also positive that the police are cracking down on crime, with the arrest of 20 suspects in the last four months. This can help to improve public safety in the state.
