Clooney Tells Biden to Quit His 2024 Re-election Bid

On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden was dealt a surprising setback when actor and prominent Democrat George Clooney encouraged him to withdraw his reelection effort and Nancy Pelosi also declined to support him.

Clooney, who hosted a celebrity-filled fundraiser with Biden only last month, declared in the New York Times, “I love Joe Biden.” However, the struggle against time is the one that he cannot prevail in.

“It’s sad to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the event was not the Joe Biden of 2010.

“He wasn’t even the 2020 Joe Biden. He was the identical individual that everyone saw during the discussion.

Biden looked worn out as he walked the stage with former president Barack Obama at the Los Angeles fundraiser that was co-hosted by Clooney and fellow movie star Julia Roberts.

Following the G7 conference in Italy, he took a direct flight to California. Since then, he has attributed his poor performance in a June 27 television debate with Donald Trump.

Since the debate, in which Biden stammered and left his mouth open as Trump spoke, his campaign for a second term in the White House has been under intense fire.

While prominent Democrats widely but unenthusiastically supported him on Tuesday, Pelosi and Clooney’s interventions set back Biden’s efforts to turn the page.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said time was running out for Biden to decide whether to withdraw his candidature, despite Biden’s repeated insistence that he intends to run. “It is up to the president to decide whether he will run,” she told MSNBC.

“We’re all encouraging him to make that decision because the time is running short.”

Pelosi said Biden should postpone any final decision until after NATO’s 75th anniversary conference in Washington, which the US president will host this week.

In an additional attempt to strengthen support for his reelection campaign, Biden visited US union leaders on his route to the conference on Wednesday.

As the alliance supports Ukraine’s war against Russia, Biden’s appearances at the NATO meeting are being keenly monitored as he attempts to reassure allies of his capacity to lead. Openly, seven Democrats in the House have urged Biden not to run for reelection.Several senators have voiced their concerns as well.

Late Tuesday, Colorado’s Michael Bennet became the first Senate Democrat to publicly criticise the president, claiming that if Biden remained on the ballot, he would lose – potentially causing congressional Democrats to lose as well.

“Donald Trump is on track, I think, to win this election, and maybe win it by a landslide and take with it the Senate and the House,” Bennet said to CNN, adding that he feels the White House “has done nothing” to establish a strategy for victory in November.

Republican candidate Trump is back on the attack after a long period of silence during the June 27 debate, accusing Biden of concealing health information.

“It’s the biggest cover-up in political history,” Trump declared during a Florida rally on Tuesday.

The previous president challenged his successor to another discussion without moderators and invited him to a round of golf.

Final Thoughts

These criticisms could reflect a broader sentiment among party members worried about Biden’s ability to effectively campaign and govern for another term, particularly in the face of a potential rematch against Donald Trump.
The fact that other prominent Democrats, including Senator Michael Bennet, have also voiced concerns suggests that this is not an isolated issue but a significant point of contention within the party.

Biden’s performance and health are likely to be scrutinized closely, especially as he engages in high-profile events like the NATO conference.

The Democratic Party will need to carefully consider its strategy moving forward, balancing loyalty to an incumbent president with the concerns about electability and leadership capacity.
