In light of the anticipated nationwide protest against hunger and bad governance, Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, has issued a directive to university vice-chancellors. The directive calls for proactive measures to ensure the security and safety of the university community, including staff and students. The minister has advised students to prioritize their safety by staying within the university environment and focusing on their studies to avoid potential violence related to the protest.

What They Are Saying

The directive was communicated in a statement issued on Monday by Chris Maiyaki, the acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC). Maiyaki urged vice-chancellors to provide specific assurances to staff and students regarding their safety.

“Consequently, the Honourable Minister has directed that Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian Universities should take proactive steps to ensure the security and safety of the university community, including staff and students,” the statement said.

“In addition, Vice-Chancellors are to please issue specific statements to assure staff and students of their safety. It is also advisable that students remain on campus to focus on their academic pursuits to avoid exposure to any potential danger during the planned protests.”

The statement emphasized that while the Federal Government acknowledges the right of Nigerians to peaceful protest, it is concerned about the safety of staff, students, and university property in the event of any protest action.

Why It Matters

The proposed nationwide protest has been perceived by many government officials as potentially escalating into violence similar to the #EndSARS protests, which resulted in significant unrest and loss of life. Despite these warnings, many Nigerians remain determined to proceed with the protest. Consequently, there are calls for students to avoid potential violence and to safeguard their lives and property within the university setting. Additionally, vice-chancellors are also tasked with protecting the interests and safety of students and staff within their institutions.

Conclusion

As the nationwide protest looms, the Minister of Education’s directive calls for heightened security and caution within universities. While acknowledging the right to peaceful demonstration, the government is emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the university community against potential violence. Both students and university officials are urged to take proactive steps to ensure safety, with students advised to remain on campus and focus on their studies. The collaborative effort between students and university leadership aims to maintain a secure environment amidst the uncertainties surrounding the upcoming protests.
