The Nigerian Organised Private Sector, which includes the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture and the Manufacturers association of Nigeria, has expressed its support for the planned nationwide protest on August 1 against the country’s hardship and rising inflation.

In a statement signed by the organisations, the OPS emphasised the importance of conversation and engagement between the government and concerned individuals.

The Nigerian Association of Small-Scale Industrialists, the Nigeria Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, and the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association are further members of the OPS.

The “The Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association, Nigeria Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, Nigeria Manufacturers Association, Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, and Nigerian Association of Small-Scale Industrialists has carefully considered the planned protest by certain citizens in response to current challenges affecting public welfare,” the statement reads.

What they’re saying

“As a political umbrella body representing Nigeria’s largest corporate membership organisations, the OPSN values communication and involvement between the government and concerned people.

“We are convinced that open and constructive debate is the most effective strategy for addressing the country’s difficulties and promoting the required improvements.

“We urge all parties to embrace this debate in order to produce substantial and long-term solutions for our country.

“However, if a decision to protest is taken, we respectfully request that it should be executed in a calm and orderly manner.

“ A peaceful protest allows citizens to express their concerns without violating the rights of others or disrupting legal and legitimate activities. It will also enable the government to respond appropriately and encourage a fruitful conversation, potentially leading to future collaboration on the outcomes of such engagements.

“As members of the business community, we are well aware of the economic consequences of major protests. Our members are critical drivers of economic growth and job creation; thus, any disruption in business operations might have serious consequences for the economy and people’s livelihoods.”

The OPS continued, “We have continually worked with the government at many levels to find long-term answers to our nation’s economic issues. It’s important to remember that many businesses are still recuperating from significant losses suffered during the hijacking #EndSARS protests a few years ago.

“We urge security agencies to maintain the safety of people and property throughout this period. The OPSN remains committed to working with all necessary stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria for all its residents.”

Bottom Line

The OPS emphasizes the need for open communication and constructive dialogue with the government.

This approach suggests that these organizations are seeking long-term, sustainable solutions to the country’s economic challenges rather than temporary fixes.

Dialogue could lead to more inclusive policy-making that addresses the root causes of economic distress.
