Iziaq Salako, Minister of State for Environment, has asked Nigerian people to address food waste as an essential step to reducing hunger, environmental preservation and ensuring food security. It is recognized that minimizing food losses and waste is a high demand issue and so it should be handled appropriately.

Speaking at a workshop for the project preparation phase of the GEF-8 Food Systems Integrated Programme (FSIP) in Nigeria, Salako emphasized the need to manage food losses and waste wisely.

He said that this strategy is a key means of addressing hunger, which is also a problem experienced by millions of people, as well as a means of tackling the environmental concerns associated with waste

In the course of interaction, the minister reconfirmed that the State remains committed to food security, sustainability, and the economy. He said, “The only way forward for the survival of food production, food security, environmental sustainability, and economic prosperity for all is our group decisions and actions.”

The country representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Nigeria, Koffy Kouacou, made their stand clear by giving an assurance of their support in the government’s efforts to address environmental issues.

He specified the project’s key factors, such as the establishment of proper food systems’ administration, financial efficacy, and the development of solid foundations for climate change

The two commissioners, namely Shehu Muazu, who is responsible for agriculture in Kebbi, and Ibrahim Mami, who is responsible for livestock and fisheries in Niger, confirmed that their respective states would implement sustainable practices and deliver on their commitments to the project.
