President Bola Tinubu has postponed this week’s Federal Executive Council meeting to an undisclosed date. Instead, he plans to convene with service chiefs. This comes as no surprise to a nation that increasingly feels neglected by its leadership.

Why It Matters

On Sunday, Tinubu addressed the nation. Yet, instead of offering solutions to pacify the protestors, his words only added to the confusion. It’s almost as if he believes Nigerians are merely jesting in their demands. The situation has escalated to the point where Northerners are bizarrely waving Russian flags, a bewildering act of foolishness that deviates from the core of the protest.

What They Are saying

The impending meeting will include the vice president, the national security adviser, all service chiefs, the inspector general of police, the comptroller generals of customs and immigration, and the chief of staff to the president. This urgent assembly of security chiefs is likely linked to the ongoing protests against nationwide hunger and hardship.

Nigerians, particularly the youth, are regrouping across the country for the fifth consecutive day of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests. Despite Tinubu’s Sunday plea for dialogue and an immediate end to the nationwide demonstrations, the protests have continued unabated.

The president insists his administration is ready to listen and address the protesters’ concerns, claiming he has heard their calls “loud and clear.” Yet, actions speak louder than words, and the streets of Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, and other states remain filled with determined demonstrators.

So, as President Tinubu prepares for his high-level security meeting, one can only wonder, will this be another exercise in futility, or will it bring the change Nigerians so desperately seek? Let’s see how it goes.
