Far-right protesters have taken to the streets of the UK, clashing violently with police over disinformation linked to a horrific mass stabbing that claimed the lives of three young girls. Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, tried to reassure Nigerians in the UK about their safety amidst these anti-immigration riots.
Montgomery met with Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), in Abuja, to discuss the situation. He revealed that a staggering twelve British towns have been affected by these riots. The unrest began late last month, sparked by an anti-immigrant misinformation campaign that fanned the flames of outrage over the tragic stabbing in Southport, northern England.
The riots were caused by the brutal deaths of three schoolgirls, aged between six and nine, who were victims of a knife attack. The social media frenzy only made things worse, with videos showing large groups trying to hijack cars driven by suspected immigrants. Other rioters targeted a hotel in Rotherham used to house asylum seekers, showing just how far the madness has spread.
Montgomery reported that over 400 individuals have been arrested in connection with the riots, and 60 special courts have been established to address the chaos. He assured Dabiri-Erewa that UK authorities are fully committed to restoring peace and normalcy to the affected areas. Despite the turmoil, Montgomery emphasized that the UK remains a welcoming home for people of all nationalities, ensuring that qualified individuals can live, study, and work in the country.
Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that no reports of harmed Nigerians have been received and expressed gratitude for the UK’s efforts. She also reminded Nigerians to heed the UK travel advisory and urged them to stay safe amidst the ongoing unrest.
Cities like Liverpool, Bristol, and Manchester, known for their large populations of foreign students, have not been spared from the protests. The situation underscores the volatile mix of misinformation, fear, and xenophobia that continues to plague societies around the world.
