Women in Ondo state’s Akoko Southwest council area conducted a peaceful half-naked protest to oppose the rise of abductions, killings, and other crimes committed by suspected herdsmen in the region.

Women in Ondo state’s Akoko Southwest council area held a peaceful half-naked demonstration to protest the increase in abductions, killings, and other crimes committed by suspected herdsmen in the region.

Irked by the ruling, the herders allegedly mobilised more herders and attacked the deceased. The farmer’s lifeless body was later discovered where he had been brutally murdered by a search team. However, the women at the demonstration sought justice for the victim and an end to herdsmen assaults in the town.

They assaulted the palace of Oka’s important traditional ruler, the Olubaka, Oba Adebori Adeleye, during a security meeting, half nude and without head restraints.

Their spokesperson, Mrs. Abigail Ojo, claimed that the accused herders raped some of their women on their farmlands and damaged their crops in the process.

Mrs Ojo, while detailing their ordeals, stated that they had essentially abandoned their fields. She requested assistance from security agencies in finding long-term answers to their concerns. Responding, the traditional ruler, Oba Adebori, stated that the security issue in the community was being handled by the state’s relevant security authorities.

Oba Adebori begged for more time to allow security forces to find long-term answers to the community’s terrible developments.

Bottom Line

The decision by the women to protest half-naked is highly symbolic in many Nigerian cultures. It represents a deep sense of desperation and is often seen as a powerful, last-resort appeal for justice and attention. This type of protest highlights the severity of the situation and the women’s urgent plea for immediate action.

The reported rise in abductions, killings, and other crimes committed by suspected herdsmen is indicative of the broader insecurity challenges in Nigeria.

The fear and anger in these communities are understandable, as people feel their lives and livelihoods are under constant threat. The allegations of rape and destruction of crops further exacerbate the sense of violation and helplessness among the affected women.
