Ilkay Gundogan has announced his retirement from international football following Germany’s quarter-final exit at Euro 2024. The 33-year-old midfielder led Germany in every match during the home-based competition before reaching a decision after reflecting on his 82-cap career.

In-form Gundogan – who netted 19 times for his country, two of those at major tournaments – was integral to Germany’s campaign. The Barcelona ace, who was handed the captain’s armband by Hansi Flick last year and retained it under Julian Nagelsmann despite Manuel Neuer’s return to fitness, was instrumental for them.

Emotionally, Gundogan spoke proudly about the chance to captain Germany at Euro 2024, but also about being part of the rebuilding process of the national team. He made very clear, however, that lately, he felt both physically and mentally exhausted by the continuous load, so he thought of retiring from international duty, while Germany would be confident for the future ahead.

The announcement by Gundogan comes amid speculations of his future at the club. Having signed for Barcelona on a free transfer in June 2023, the midfielder is reportedly considering moving back to Manchester City, where he had immense success, or exploring offers from clubs in Turkiye and Saudi Arabia.

In his glittering club career, Gundogan has won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four EFL Cups, and a Champions League for City, where he famously scored the fastest goal in FA Cup final history.
