The Federal Government has raised concern about the reported dehumanising conditions faced by detainees at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar, Cross River State.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior who ordered the investigation, condemned the incident as a major breach of the norm of care and dignity.

Babatunde Alao, the minister’s Special Adviser for Media, announced this in a statement made on Sunday in Abuja.

What they’re saying

“The Honourable Minister of Interior, Hon. (Dr.) Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has taken grave exception to a disturbing video report on Facebook alleging that inmates at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar are subjected to inhumane treatment, including being served poorly cooked beans for breakfast.

“The Minister considers this occurrence a significant violation of the norms of care and dignity to which detainees are entitled.

“He has ordered a thorough and urgent investigation into this incident, and those culpable will face consequences.

“The Minister warns that any gaps in the quality of food, sanitation, or inmate welfare will not be accepted, and that the service must guarantee detainees are treated with the decency and respect they deserve.

“The Minister of Interior will not tolerate any type of cruelty or neglect of people in custody.

“The findings of the investigation will be made public, and necessary disciplinary actions will be taken” .

Bottom Line

Ensuring proper food, sanitation, and overall welfare for inmates is essential for maintaining the basic human rights and dignity of individuals, regardless of their custodial status. The Minister’s firm stance on this issue reflects a broader commitment to prison reform and upholding human rights standards.

Publicizing the findings of the investigation and taking necessary disciplinary actions will not only address the immediate issue but also serve as a deterrent against future violations. It is imperative that the investigation is conducted transparently and that the outcomes lead to meaningful improvements in the conditions of custodial facilities.

Overall, this investigation represents a significant move towards improving the Nigerian prison system and ensuring that it aligns with international human rights standards. It is crucial that such efforts continue and that the government remains vigilant in protecting the rights and dignity of all detainees.
