Recent developments have raised concerns about the safety of a popular skincare product, Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered a recall of the soap, specifically targeting the “Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap (100g) with batch number 81832M 08, produced in Germany.”

Why the Recall?

NAFDAC made the announcement on their X (formerly Twitter) account, citing the presence of a chemical impurity in the soap. The chemical in question, Butylphenyl Methylpropional (also known as Lilial), is associated with serious health risks. It violates the Cosmetic Products Regulation, which strictly prohibits the use of this substance.

Lilial, or BMHCA, has been linked to reproductive health issues and poses risks to unborn children. Additionally, it has been known to cause skin sensitization, triggering allergic reactions in certain users.

Official Statement from NAFDAC

In their official statement, NAFDAC explained:

“The product does not comply with the Cosmetic Products Regulation, as it contains Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), which is prohibited due to its risks of reproductive harm, danger to unborn children, and potential for causing skin sensitization. Several regulatory authorities in the EU have already banned its marketing.”

Other Affected Dove Products

Beyond the Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap, other Dove cosmetic products containing BMHCA have also faced recalls in various countries. These include:

  1. – Derma Spa Goodness
  2. – Men Care and Men Care+ Sensitive Shield
  3. – Natural Touch
  4. – Nourishing Body Care Light Hydro
  5. – Pampering Body Lotion
  6. – Go Fresh
  7. – Talco con Crema
  8. – Extra Fresh
  9. – Goodness3 Skincare Ritual
  10. – Invisible Dry Antiperspirant Spray
  11. – Go Fresh Revitalize Nourishing Shower Gel
  12. – Caring Hand Wash

NAFDAC’s Position on Imported Soaps

NAFDAC also stressed that soaps, including the recalled Dove products, are not present in their official database. Importation of soaps is prohibited in Nigeria under the country’s restricted and import prohibition list. Furthermore, soaps and cosmetics are among the items ineligible for foreign exchange to import in Nigeria.

NAFDAC warned all importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to be cautious and vigilant. The agency urged the public to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the recalled products, emphasizing the need for adherence to the import regulations.

Public Advisory

NAFDAC called on individuals in possession of the recalled soap to immediately discontinue its use. They advised the public to submit any remaining stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.

NAFDAC also urged healthcare professionals to report any adverse reactions experienced from using regulated products. Reports can be submitted through various channels, including NAFDAC’s official website or the Med-Safety app, available on Android and iOS platforms.

Bottom Line

The recall of Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap and other related products highlights the importance of regulatory vigilance in safeguarding public health. Consumers are advised to stay informed and cautious about the products they use, particularly those that may pose potential health risks.
