Manchester United had it easy, reaching the last 16 of the League Cup with a 7-0 thrashing of third-tier Barnsley at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Christian Eriksen all netted twice to inspire the rout.

Rashford, fresh off ending his six-month goal drought over the weekend, opened the scoring after 16 minutes. Antony added a second from the penalty spot in the 35th minute with Garnacho making it 3-0 in first-half stoppage time.

United continued to pull clear after the break, Garnacho netting his second from a Rashford assist before repaying the favour for Rashford’s second goal as United went 5-0 ahead. Eriksen netted a sixth in the 81st minute before sealing it with a long-range strike to cap United’s biggest ever League Cup win.

Elsewhere, Brentford won 3-1 against Leyton Orient, while Crystal Palace progressed courtesy of a 2-1 win against QPR.

Fulham were knocked out in a surprise defeat, losing 16-15 on penalties to Preston North End after the match had finished 1-1 – the longest shootout in League Cup history.

At Goodison Park, Everton went out after losing 6-5 on penalties to Southampton after the match ended 1-1 after Taylor Harwood-Bellis equalized for the visitors following Abdoulaye Doucoure’s opener.

In other action, Sheffield Wednesday edged Blackpool 1-0, and Stoke City slipped past Fleetwood Town on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
