Edo Polls: What to Expect?
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

There have been many discussions and political opinions ahead of the Edo Governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024. As members of Edo State prepare to vote on Saturday, an important question for political observers is: what can we expect from this year’s polls?

Regardless of who emerges victorious in the Edo election, there are certain outcomes that the general public already anticipates will play out in this election.

High political tension

Hypothetical, one very visible thing that has been in the atmosphere since the buildup leading to the election is the political tension that has characterized this year’s campaign. During the election, political parties and their members will be on edge, eager to see how favorable the election will be for them. So definitely, this year’s polls will see a flurry of politicking and last-minute strategizing from the parties. One key political question is how election tension will influence voter attitudes and their willingness to participate. However, this is Edo! As Pedro Obaseki stated on Thursday, the people here have the resilience to overcome any challenges that may arise.

The After-Election tension

Regardless of who wins the polls, it is certain that there would be an after-election tension in Edo. The main contention will be between the APC and the PDP, Governor Obaseki had earlier warned that the Saturday election will be a “do or die affair”. Although not to quote him out of context, his emphasis was on the needs of the people. However, it is quite certain that this year’s election will be a “do or die affair”. Political parties have staked their all on the outcome of this election and are willing to go all out to see that their candidate prevails. So regardless of who wins the polls, it’s definite that there will be after-election tension.

Election rigging

The winner of the Edo polls will be determined by various factors, one of which is the ability to manipulate election results. Although this is not ideal for a democratic election, Nigerian politics has always been dirty involving a lot of propaganda and political maneuver to favor the strongest candidate. The Saturday poll will not just reflect the people’s will, it will also show who is stronger in the rivalry between Obaseki and Oshiomhole.

The People’s Choice

Amidst the politicking and electoral malpractice likely to surround the Edo polls, it would be unfair not to acknowledge that the people’s choice may still prevail, even if only reflecting a small percentage of their will.

So as Edo goes to poll on Saturday, all political fingers are crossed, the outcome is also unpredictable but voters must match on to their polling units with courage and ensure that their voices are heard.
