Nigeria has joined the global fight against lead poisoning, making a pledge to protect vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Speaking at the Lead-Free Future event during the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to this cause.

The event, co-hosted by UNICEF and USAID, brought attention to the risks posed by lead exposure, especially in industries like mining, battery recycling, construction, and painting.

Alake outlined plans to secure equipment to detect lead contamination in affected areas and called for increased awareness and action to reduce lead hazards.

Led by UNEP and WHO, the global campaign seeks to eradicate lead paint and encourage safer alternatives.

Nigeria’s involvement signifies a critical step forward in protecting the health and safety of its citizens.
