Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces are sustaining pressure on Russian troops in Russia’s Kursk region, where Kyiv launched a significant incursion in August. “Fighting is now going on in Kursk region for a third month, and we are maintaining the necessary pressure on Russia in this sector,” Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address following a meeting with senior commanders.
Ukrainian forces have successfully captured dozens of villages in the Kursk region, which lies on Russia’s border with Ukraine. However, Moscow claims that it has recaptured some of the lost territory. As Ukraine continues to push in Kursk, Russian troops have focused their efforts on advancing in Donetsk region, to the south, which remains the primary focal point of Moscow’s ongoing campaign in Ukraine.
Russian Forces Enter Eastern Outskirts of Toretsk
While Ukraine pushes forward in Kursk, the eastern city of Toretsk, a frontline location, faces mounting pressure from Russian forces. According to Ukraine’s military, Russian troops entered the eastern outskirts of the city on Monday, just days after the fall of the strategic town of Vuhledar. “The situation is unstable, fighting is taking place literally at every entrance to the city,” said Anastasiia Bobovnikova, spokesperson for the Operational Tactical Group “Luhansk,” in an interview with Ukraine’s national broadcaster.
The Russian defense ministry has not commented on the situation in Toretsk, though earlier reports confirmed that Russian forces inflicted significant damage to Ukrainian manpower and equipment in the surrounding area. The conflict in Toretsk marks a critical challenge for Ukraine as it balances the fight in both northern and southern fronts.
The Ongoing Struggle
