On Friday, France announced new curfew measures to try and check civil unrest on its Caribbean island of Martinique, which has been hit by violent protests over the last month due to anger over the skyrocketing living costs.

Martinique is a Caribbean island that’s part of the Lesser Antilles and is an overseas region of France.

From reports gathered, the directive was given by the government on Thursday, saying that the curfew will take effect from 9pm to 5am.

In addition, the local French administration for Martinique said it was prohibiting public gatherings until October 14, and banning the purchase of products that could be used for arson attacks.

The protests had disrupted flights at Martinique airport, with some being re-directed to the neighbouring French island of Guadeloupe.

At least three stores and several car parks were torched, and burnt-out cars blocked traffic on a major road in Fort-de-France, the island’s main city, according to RFI.

One man was also allegedly killed after being shot but the police did not open fire during the night.

The protests have disrupted flights at Martinique airport and flights are being re-directed to the neighbouring French island of Guadeloupe.
