Manchester United earned their first home Premier League win since the opening week of the campaign, coming from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford thanks to a star showing from Alejandro Garnacho.

Brentford began where most would expect them to be, with Kevin Schade missing a gilt-edged chance inside the first five minutes, and United struggled to create much in the first half to extend their goalless run to over 300 minutes.

Just before half-time, controversy came when Matthijs de Ligt was told to go off the pitch for treatment, leaving United exposed; Brentford punished this as a close-range header from Ethan Pinnock handed the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

United responded well after the break. Just two minutes into the second half, Garnacho, who had been United’s bright spot, fired home a stunning volley from a Marcus Rashford cross to level the score. The equaliser sparked United’s attack into life once again with Garnacho and Casemiro both testing Brentford keeper Mark Flekken.

The second half saw Brentford rarely threaten and United eventually punished them. A brilliant flick from Bruno Fernandes sent Rasmus Højlund through on goal and the Danish striker coolly chipped over Flekken to complete the comeback.

United controlled the rest of the match to record a vital 2-1 win, the second season in a row in which they have come back from behind to beat Brentford at Old Trafford.
