Students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Idi-Araba campus, are protesting against a planned increase in dormitory fees. The university’s administration wants to raise the fees from N65,000 to N80,000 for two semesters and N100,000 for a full year.

Students from the College of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy are upset and are chanting slogans like “Change the memo, we won’t go.” They want the fee increase to be cancelled because of previous agreements.

In response, UNILAG officials told students to leave the dorms. But the protesters are not backing down; they say they won’t leave until their demands are met.

Police are there to keep an eye on the situation. The students are asking the university to think again about the fee increase.

Olusegun Akinnagbe, Principal Assistant Secretary in charge of student affairs, sent a letter telling students to leave their dorms even though they paid for a full year. If students want to stay longer, they can apply, but they will have to pay extra based on how much time they stay.
