Israel Claims Victory in Strikes; Iran Prepares for Retaliatory Action

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Sunday that Israel’s recent airstrikes had “hit hard” against Iran’s defenses and missile production. In his speech, Netanyahu described the attack as “precise and powerful,” affirming that it achieved all its objectives. Israel had previously warned that it would respond to Iran’s October 1 attack, following through with its own strikes on Saturday, which has raised concerns about how Iran might respond.

Iran’s Response: Preparing to Show “Might”

On Sunday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei instructed Iranian officials to prepare a response that would showcase Iran’s strength to Israel. Khamenei advised that the impact of Saturday’s strike should not be minimized or exaggerated. However, with hostilities already active in Gaza and Lebanon, a direct confrontation between Israel and Iran carries significant risks, as it could ignite a broader regional conflict. While Iran’s exact response remains uncertain, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf indicated that any retaliation would be a matter of self-defense and would be “definite, in compliance with the requirements.”

Escalating Tensions in the Region

Iran, a long-standing and heavily armed rival of Israel, has engaged in reciprocal strikes with Israel over recent months, particularly in connection with the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, where Iran supports anti-Israel resistance groups. In a separate statement, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant asserted that Iran could no longer rely on its allies, Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, to act effectively against Israel. Gallant argued that “these groups are no longer an effective tool” for Tehran, citing Israel’s recent efforts to dismantle Hamas’s military network in Gaza and to neutralize much of Hezbollah’s command and missile capabilities.

In response, Hamas insisted that it remains operationally capable, and Israel has recently launched significant operations in northern Gaza, targeting what it describes as regrouping Hamas militants. Hezbollah also stated that its command structure remains intact, asserting that it still possesses substantial missile capabilities.

Will Iran Retaliate?

The question of whether Iran will respond to Israel’s strikes is now a central concern, with implications for regional security. Any Iranian response could potentially draw in Israel’s strongest ally, the United States. The U.S. president has repeatedly urged an end to hostilities following Israel’s recent strikes, suggesting that Israel’s actions should mark the end of direct attacks between Israel and Iran. However, he also warned that if Iran chooses to respond, the United States is prepared to support Israel in ensuring its security and defense in the region.
