A stoppage-time penalty from Jarrod Bowen sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory for West Ham United over Manchester United as the Hammers completed a third consecutive home league victory over the Red Devils. This defeat means United have picked up just one victory in their last eight outings across all competitions.

United started aggressively, with Alejandro Garnacho hitting the bar in a few minutes. Rasmus Højlund and Bruno Fernandes also got close to finding the net, but Diogo Dalot had the best chance with an open goal, but he missed it. West Ham’s keeper, Łukasz Fabiański, was in fine fettle, blocking most of United’s chances, although he almost scored an own goal, deflecting a corner kick by Christian Eriksen onto his crossbar.

West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui made three halftime changes in a bid to assume control of the match. The breakthrough finally came for them when Bowen’s cutback allowed Danny Ings a shot and some deadly deflection by substitute Crysencio Summerville meant it was into the net. United quickly rallied back with Casemiro scoring after West Ham failed to deal with a set-piece.

Matthijs De Ligt was then controversially punished for a trip on Ings – despite the striker seemingly controlling the ball with his hand – in the dying embers. Bowen coolly dispatched the decisive penalty in West Ham’s first back-to-back home league wins since December.
