Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the club’s new manager to take over from Erik ten Hag. The 39-year-old will join from Sporting CP on November 11 after United paid his €10 million release clause in addition to a further €1 million in compensation for his immediate transfer. Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in temporary charge until then.

Amorim is highly regarded as one of the best young coaches in Europe and will join on a deal until 2027. He will be joined at Old Trafford by his backroom staff from Sporting: Emanuel Ferro, Adelio Candido, Carlos Fernandes and Jorge Vital, as well as sports scientist Paulo Barreira.

Amorim’s final games in charge of Sporting, against Estrela da Amadora, Manchester City and SC Braga before stepping down: His replacement at the Alvalade is set to be Joao Pereira, Sporting’s current B team coach.
The 38-year-old began his managerial career in Portugal with Casa Pia, moving to SC Braga before taking up his post at Sporting in 2020. During his tenure in charge, he won two league titles, two Portuguese Cups, and a Super Cup, ending the club’s 19-year wait for a title.

This becomes the first managerial job outside of Portugal for Amorim, who takes over at Manchester United. The team currently lies 14th in the Premier League with just 11 points and has made a poor start in the Europa League, having managed just three points in the group stages thus far.

His first match with United comes on November 25 against Ipswich Town, while his Old Trafford debut in the Europa League will be on November 28 against Bodo/Glimt.
