Manchester United Finish with Flourish as Van Nistelrooy’s Reign Ends in 3-0 Win Over Leicester

On what was Ruud van Nistelrooy’s last day as interim manager, Manchester United made sure he finished his tenure in style as they ran out 3-0 winners against Leicester City at Old Trafford to extend their unbeaten run against newly-promoted teams to 19 games.

The United opened their account in the 17 minutes of the game after the match had started very cautiously. Bruno Fernandes made his 250th appearance for the club with a great finish from the edge of the box thanks to an intelligent backheel from Amad Diallo. Leicester could have restored parity as early as then, Wilfred Ndidi’s attempt easily grasped by André Onana.

United doubled their lead before halftime through an own goal. Fernandes mishit a header from a Mazraoui cross, but the ball deflected off of Victor Kristiansen and into Leicester’s net. Just before the break, Amad nearly added a third but was denied by Mads Hermansen.

Leicester applied second-half pressure as Jordan Ayew hit the side-netting, but they sorely missed the presence of Jamie Vardy upfront. United’s counter-attacking threat remained, however, and substitute Alejandro Garnacho sealed the win with a stunning curling finish late on.

The result extends United’s dominance over Leicester, who have now won just once in their last 15 league visits to Old Trafford.
