Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan could endorse the current governor of Rivers State, Governor Nyesom Wike, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer, even though Wike has not seen Jonathan for consultation before or after declaring his presidential election aspirations. There are several reasons why Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is more inclined to support Governor Nyesom Ezenwa Wike ahead of the 2023 election.
Nyesom Wike should contact former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan before declaring his decision to run for president in the 2018 presidential election. They are both from the same area and worked well together when Jonathan was President of Nigeria. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan made a big difference in the forces that helped Nyesom Wike become governor of Rivers State.
The first reason Jonathan could still support Governor Nyesom Ezenwa Wike ahead of the next presidential election is that he has not endorsed any other politician within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform till now. During a visit to Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, asked for advice on the opposition party’s presidential election ticket. However, Jonathan did not tell Mohammed that he had endorsed him.
Second, he may want to clear his reputation in light of recent claims linking the country’s previous president to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Several lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress (APC) have visited Jonathan in the past, and some of them have attempted to persuade him to join the governing party. Jonathan could wish to clear the air by supporting a PDP candidate from the south.
If former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan strongly supports Nyesom Wike, it would be clear that the former President remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the next presidential election. However, all of this would be impossible if Nyesom Wike doesn’t bend the knee to Jonathan and ask for his counsel.
