For the 25th anniversary of 9/11, NFL teams will be making special tributes during the first week of the NFL’s new season.
All 32 NFL teams will participate in tributes honoring the victims, survivors, emergency responders and families that were affected by the terrorist attacks. “We continue to honor the memory of those we lost on September 11 and the heroes whose courage and sacrifice inspired our nation,” Commissioner Roger Goodell stated.
He said there would be a variety of game-day activities that include a range of activities both in the stadium and broadcast integrations in a way that emphasizes service and unity.
Teams would stencil the words “Never Forget” into the end zones of their stadiums, and officials would wear 9/11 tribute coins for their pregame tosses. The coins would then be used to go to the NFL’s 9/11 charities. In the Giants and Cowboys game, NYPD officers will be honored. The players and coaches on the NFL teams will also be wearing commemorative caps and “Never Forget” shirts during warm-ups.
The tributes will take place as far away as Australia, as it will be the NFL’s first regular-season game there and it will feature a number of American and Australian service members who will lead some of the ceremonies.
