Airtel Nigeria is asking for higher prices, saying their costs have gone up by 300%. CEO Dinesh Balsingh explained that prices haven’t changed in more than 10 years, even though costs have gone up a lot. He said raising prices is important to keep services good and support Nigeria’s digital progress.
He also talked about the massive investments needed to improve networks because more people are using digital services in banking, education, and healthcare. He believes adjusting prices will help the company stay strong in the long term, reach more areas, and provide better services.
The CEO of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, recently revealed that telecom operators requested a 100% increase in tariffs, cautioning that the industry faced a gaping sustainability crisis. Dare to venture further, he said, the regulators would not approve the hike in full.
The telecommunication associations in Nigeria, ALTON and ATCON, have been pressing for a review measure for over two years, arguing that it has become one of the serious threats to the industry due to the ever-escalating costs.
