Is This The New Trend? Celebrities Turn to Cosplay Dressing at Award Ceremonies
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

A new trend has seemingly emerged on the red carpets of prestigious award ceremonies in Hollywood: celebrities dressing as cosplayers. This phenomenon – known as cosplay dressing has seen celebrities wearing outfits inspired by iconic characters from media including: movies, TV shows, video games, and even historical figures.

This trend is almost like a breath of fresh air because unlike traditional red carpet fashion, which often focuses on high-end couture and classic elegance, cosplay dressing brings a playful and imaginative twist to these star-studded events.

One of the most recent examples of this trend was seen at the 2025 Golden Globes. A-list celebrities such as Ayo Edebiri, Kylie Jenner, and Zendaya trended on social media fashion spaces for their cosplay-inspired outfits, with each person paying homage to a different iconic look from the past.

Ayo Edebiri had donned a custom Loewe suit as a modern spin on actress Julia Roberts’ 1990 Golden Globes look. Kylie Jenner on the other hand, channeled Liz Hurley’s 1999 CFDA Awards dress as her outfit of choice to the Golden Globes. Meanwhile, Zendaya, known for her bold fashion choices, paid tribute to Joyce Bryant with a gorgeous Louis Vuitton gown.

If you’re like me, you’re probably questioning why cosplay dressing has now become a trend at award ceremonies. Well, apparently, the answer lies in the growing influence of pop culture and the mounting desire for celebrities to stand out in an increasingly crowded media landscape.

So by embracing cosplay, these celebrities not only show off their creative side, they also connect with fans on a deeper level, keying into the nostalgia and excitement that these iconic characters evoke among the fans.

In this article, we’ll explore the origins of cosplay, its impact on the fashion industry, and how it reflects broader cultural shifts. From the historical roots of cosplay to its modern-day manifestations on the red carpet, this article will provide a comprehensive look at how cosplay dressing is redefining celebrity fashion.

Exploring the Trend of Cosplay Dressing

Origins of Cosplay

Cosplay, — which is short for “costume play”— originated in the 1980s and has since become a global phenomenon. This trend began in the United States, where fans of science fiction and fantasy would dress up as their favorite characters for conventions. Eventually, the trend spread to Japan, where it evolved and became deeply intertwined with anime and manga culture.

Nowadays, cosplay as we know it is a vibrant subculture with dedicated conventions, competitions, and a passionate community of enthusiasts.

Transition to Red Carpet Events

The transition of cosplay from strictly conventions to now red carpets marks a significant shift in celebrity fashion. Traditionally, award ceremonies like the Golden Globes, Oscars, and Met Gala have established themselves as platforms for showcasing haute couture and designer gowns. But now, celebrities have started to embrace cosplay dressing as a way to stand out in their red carpet outings and make a statement indicating a broader cultural shift towards celebrating individuality and creativity.

Impact on the Fashion Industry

The growing popularity of cosplay dressing has had a profound impact on the fashion industry. Designers are now increasingly collaborating with celebrities to create custom outfits that mix high fashion with cosplay elements. This trend has also led to creative designs and a wider acceptance of what we’ve considered unconventional fashion on the red carpet. Fashion houses have now shown how open they are to experimenting with the quite untapped niche of cosplay.

The Broader Cultural Shifts

Cosplay dressing at award ceremonies isn’t just a fashion statement; it represents a broader cultural shift. The growing influence of pop culture coupled with the rise of superhero movies, anime, and video games, has made cosplay more mainstream. Also, popular social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok magnify these trends, allowing celebrities to connect with fans and showcase their creative outfits to a global audience. This trend also taps into our sense of nostalgia, especially when homage to beloved characters and iconic looks from the past is paid.

Modern-Day Manifestations on the Red Carpet

Aside from the aforementioned celebrities named in the introduction, other celebrities who toed this trend at the Golden Globes include:

1. Ariana Grande:

Ariana often opts for glamorous, princess-like gowns with voluminous skirts and elegant details. She loves classic Hollywood glamour with a modern twist but this time around, she chose to cosplay. Her Audrey Hepburn-inspired look (Audrey Hepburn’s famous look from “Funny Face”) at the 2025 Golden Globes was a departure from her usual style, as she wore a black Givenchy dress and a chic updo.

2. Emma D’Arcy:

Emma is famed for their edgy, androgynous fashion choices, often incorporating bold colors and unique silhouettes in their outfit. For the 82nd edition of the Golden Globes however, they opted for a Brad Pitt-inspired gothic outfit.

3. Timothée Chalamet:

Timothée’s style often consists of wearing high-fashion suits with unique patterns and accessories. His Bob Dylan-inspired outfit (Tom Ford suit with a blue scarf) for the Golden Globes red carpet, however, added a nostalgic element although it did keep to his signature boldness.

The Future of Cosplay Dressing

From the above instances, it’s clear that cosplay dressing is here to stay. The trend is likely to keep evolving, with more celebrities embracing this playful and unique approach to red carpet fashion. Fashion designers, on the other hand will keep pushing the boundaries, creating innovative and bold looks that blend high fashion with pop culture references.
