Zendaya walked the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards red carpet on September 14, and the internet has not been quiet since. It was not the custom Prada gown or the Mikimoto jewelry that caused the frenzy. It was her hair.

She debuted a “modern, sculpted pixie” that her hairstylist described as “feminine and refined with a little rebellion”. And just like that, the pixie cut went from niche to everywhere.

The Look That Started It

Zendaya’s pixie was not a last-minute decision. She had actually debuted a curled version two days earlier at a Prada event in New York, where hairstylist Coree Moreno emphasised her natural curls for a softer, more romantic feel. But for the Emmys, Moreno gave it a different energy entirely—spikier, tousled, and deliberate.

The inspiration was clear. “We’re paying homage to another great African American, beautiful actress,” her stylist Law Roach told E! News, confirming the reference was to Halle Berry’s iconic 2002 Oscars look. The result was a cut that felt both nostalgic and thoroughly modern.

Moreno’s approach was architectural. He used the ghd Speed dryer and Sculpt flat iron to build the silhouette, working in “small, irregular sections” to create what he called “the architecture of the pixie”. The products—göt2b glued 2-in-1 Spray Wax and Blasting Freeze Spray—were used to add grip, separation, and hold without making the hair look stiff.

“I wanted the silhouette to feel feminine and refined with a little rebellion,” Moreno explained. “Sleek around the perimeter with airy, piecey texture and controlled height through the crown”.

The Bixie Factor: Why This Cut Is Everywhere

Zendaya’s look is part of a broader movement. The “bixie”—a hybrid of a bob and a pixie—has been building momentum all year, and 2026 is being called its breakout moment.

The appeal is simple: it gives you the edge of a pixie without the commitment. As Wella Ambassador Briana Cisneros explains, the bixie “is the perfect blend of a pixie and a bob”. It is shorter than a bob but longer than a traditional pixie, with textured ends and face-framing layers that make it wearable for almost any hair type.

The style has roots in the ’90s, when Gwyneth Paltrow, Meg Ryan, and Halle Berry all wore variations of the cut. But the 2026 version feels fresher, more deliberate. It is less about rebellion for rebellion’s sake and more about intentional, low-maintenance polish.

Is It for You?

Before you book that salon appointment, there is a reality check. Celebrity hairstylist Sam McKnight warns that a pixie is not as low-maintenance as it looks. “Yes, there’ll be less time in the shower, but there’ll be more time trimming,” he says. “The hardest bit of maintenance is the trims every two to three weeks. Otherwise, it will start to get big and round”.

If you are considering the chop, here is what to know based on face shape :

  • Round faces: Keep volume at the crown and add a deep side part to elongate.
  • Square faces: Soft, textured layers and a longer fringe will soften the jawline.
  • Long faces: Bangs are your friend. They break up the length of the face.
  • Heart-shaped faces: Side-swept bangs and longer ear-side pieces balance a wider forehead and pointed chin.
  • Oval faces: You can wear almost any variation, from a gamine pixie to a longer bixie.

Takeaway

Zendaya’s Emmys pixie is a statement that short hair can be elegant, edgy, and deeply personal all at once. Whether you go full pixie or ease into a bixie, the message is the same: sometimes the most powerful beauty move is the one that feels like a risk.

As Moreno put it, the goal was a silhouette that felt “feminine and refined with a little rebellion” . And honestly? That sounds like a pretty good way to approach life, too.
