Trump Imposes Tariffs on Colombia Over Migrant Dispute

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he has imposed a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Colombia after the country refused to allow two repatriation flights carrying undocumented Colombian migrants to land. Trump shared the decision on his Truth Social network, warning that the tariffs will increase to 50% within a week if the issue is not resolved.

This is the first retaliatory action by the Trump administration against another nation over immigration. Trump argued that the move was necessary to address Colombia’s refusal to cooperate on deportations.

Petro Halts Deportation Flights

Colombian President Gustavo Petro responded by halting all US deportation flights to Colombia, accusing the US of treating Colombian migrants “like criminals.” Petro’s public declaration led to two US military planes being turned back overnight, according to flight tracking data.

Rising Diplomatic Tensions

Trump condemned Petro’s actions as a threat to US national security and public safety, arguing that Colombia’s decision violated its international obligations to accept repatriated citizens.

Bottom Line

The escalating standoff between the US and Colombia over immigration highlights the challenges of international cooperation in addressing migration issues. With tariffs set to increase and diplomatic tensions rising, the dispute could have far-reaching implications for trade and bilateral relations.
